Gate of Heaven Cemetery

Counselor

This position reports directly to the Cemetery Manager(s). Candidate will perform a variety of cemetery administrative tasks and activities, as assigned. On a limited basis, direct the secretary and field personnel as necessary in the performance of assigned tasks. In the absence of the manager, may be authorized to manage the cemetery on the manager’s behalf. Full-time, non-exempt position. Work hours are Monday­ Saturday, 8:00 AM - 4:30 PM.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Presenting and selling cemetery goods and services on cemetery grounds.
  • Directing daily funeral activities.
  • Performing office administrative and field operation functions as assigned by the cemetery manager.
  • Other miscellaneous duties, as assigned.

Qualifications
A successful candidate for this position must possess a compassionate manner and a commitment to assisting the families we serve. Must be able to maintain strong attention to detail, manage multiple tasks at once and high levels of organization. The candidate must possess outstanding oral and written communication skills, in addition to:

  • Cemetery experience preferred but not necessary.
  • High School or G.E.D. diploma, as well as driver’s license required.
  • Ability to lift/carry 80 lbs. unassisted, and work in adverse weather conditions (i.e. extreme summer heat and winter cold, and other extremes of weather related to outdoor elements).
  • Proficiency in operating basic office machinery.
  • Knowledge of and support for the tenets of the Roman Catholic Church.

Director of Cemeteries

This position reports directly to the President/CEO. Candidate will assist the President/CEO of The Catholic Cemeteries of the Archdiocese of Washington, located at its corporate offices in the Aspen Hill area of Silver Spring. This full-time, exempt, non-profit management position offers a competitive salary, company vehicle and generous benefit package. Work hours are Monday-Friday, 8:00 AM - 4:30 PM.

Duties and Responsibilities
Basic duties include assisting the President/CEO in managing the operations of The Catholic Cemeteries of the Archdiocese of Washington, Inc. (CCAW) and work collaboratively with the CCAW Executive Management team to include the President/CEO, Director of Operations and Corporate Controller. Specific responsibilities also include:

  • Develop, recommend and implement new cemetery goods and services.
  • Assist the President/CEO with the recruiting, hiring, training, and assignments of qualified personnel to meet organizational staffing requirements.
  • As directed by the President/CEO, represent CCAW in its dealings and relationships with other entities; i.e., other agencies, parishes, clergy general public, local, state and federal governments, local and national cemetery associations, non-Catholic cemeteries, funeral directors, etc.
  • Provide functional guidance and support to managers concerning capital projects.
  • Provide functional guidance and assistance to managers in the performance of their assigned duties.
  • Develop in-house training program for administrative personnel.
  • Develop employment recruitment, onboarding, and retention procedures.
  • All other duties as assigned by the President/CEO.

Qualifications
A successful candidate for this position maintains a strong attention to detail, the ability to manage multiple tasks at once, high levels of organization, and a commitment to assisting others. The candidate must have strong supervisory, interpersonal, and communication skills - both written and oral, in addition to possessing:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
  • A minimum of five years of experience in cemetery management.
  • A minimum of three years of experience in cemetery administration.
  • Non-profit experience a plus.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
  • Project professional poise and judgement.
  • Knowledge of and support for the tenets of the Roman Catholic Church.

Staff Accountant

This position reports directly to the Controller. Candidate will perform a variety of accounting activities as assigned including maintaining and reconciling various asset accounts and performing periodic internal audits. In addition, he or she will assist the Controller in managing the day to day operations of the Accounting Department. Full-time, exempt position. Work hours are Monday-Friday, 8:00 AM - 4:30 PM.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Prepare monthly asset reconciliations including bank accounts, inventory and fixed assets.
  • Reconcile and maintain Trust Account and all associated records.
  • Oversee the timely follow-up of accounts receivable.
  • Design and perform internal financial audits to insure the protection of Company assets.
  • Provide functional accounting related guidance and support to department/cemetery managers.
  • Assist with the surveillance of existing internal control procedures and make suggestions for improvement, where necessary.
  • Assist in preparation of work papers required for annual audit.
  • Assist in the review of invoices, receipts and contracts for accuracy and policy compliance.
  • Maintaining organizational integrity of accounting records and files.
  • Respond to inquiries from customers.
  • Assist the Controller in special projects as needed.

Qualifications
A successful candidate for this position maintains strong attention to detail, the ability to manage multiple tasks at once, high levels of organization, and a commitment to assisting others. The candidate must possess outstanding oral and written communication skills, in addition to possessing:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Business Administration is required. Must be a CPA candidate.
  • 2 years of practical accounting experience is preferred.
  • Experience with non-profit accounting a plus.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Project professional poise and judgement.
  • Knowledge of and support for the tenets of the Roman Catholic Church.
